Federated internet - it’s the only way it can stay free. Many people hosting services makes it very hard to close free speech. Gives the individual the capacity to added their own filters.

Exactly, the way it was designed to be, more or less. an interconnected network (hence: inter-net) of systems and networks connected in a federated manner enabling each node to transmit and receive whatever they damn well please.

Unfortunately most people don’t want to run their own nodes for those communication protocols they can do so for (e.g. email, web, sime chat protocols) and can’t run their own nodes for most social media networks (neither Identica nor Diaspora really have the user base or feature set to be viable alternatives to Twitter and FarceBook, respectively).
