Pirate Party "Right Wing" ideas thread

Some variation of this old idea? Or something different?

He made this video in 2010.

Hans Rosling was a Swedish professor who studied UN population data, and spoke widely on his findings.

You can also download and use his wonderful GapMinder tool from https://www.gapminder.org/tools-offline/ to chart your own analysis of UN global statistical trends over time.

Yeah that is a good point. I guess that means that effect applies only if we accepted predominantly immigrants from those countries, which we donā€™t really.

Thinking in global terms about population is a tricky thing. Does high immigration reduce population growth because migrants to wealthy countries tend to have less children? Or does it increase population growth because countries develop more slowly (and therefore take longer to stabilise their population) as a result of constantly losing their most qualified and educated citizens to richer nations?

The advantage of thinking nationally is that you donā€™t have to know as much. See for eg: Pauline Hanson.

Yeah from memory global population is set to peak before the end of this century, and then the problem will be falling fertility rates. Hopefully not to the extent of ā€œChildren of Menā€ (great movie).
I guess the point here is population policy is mainly a national issue rather than an international problem given current forecasts and projects.

Cool find, I had no idea about this.
He says ā€œorā€, I say why not ā€œandā€?

Definitely worth. The amount of environmental restoration and regeneration that could be done is immense. Especially in rural areas which the CDEP used to operate in.
I keep hearing about these crazy ideas how weā€™re going to leave Earth and move to other planets etc. This seems stupid, the economics of rehabilitating and regenerating our land are far less costly than trying to terraform a red rock in space with minimal atmosphere and no liquid water. Requires far less skilled labour as well.

This would be especially beneficial for farmers. A JG would provide income security during commodity cycle fluctuations and allow farmers to switch between agricultural output to environmental restoration during times of low prices.

I heard this argument made to cut down on immigration (which in our case is mostly skills based). Itā€™s a serious issue for developing countries since they have little incentive to develop strong educational institutions and build human capital when itā€™s incentivised to continuously flee.

@edeity there so many things wrong with that image, not least of which being the spelling and grammar. Iā€™d also argue that itā€™s a poor representation of chaos and the wrong binary to try to make a comparison like that. It wouldā€™ve probably been more consistent to try to make that argument along and authoritarian vs libertarian line, but doing so humourously has already been done and done much better than that. Iā€™m sure thereā€™s a copy of The Principia Discordia online somewhere.

Oh the irony. I never conceived that Dick Smith would be the Australian Democratic Socialist Sanders/Corbyn ā€œSocialist Jesusā€ who would embark on a crusade against Neo-liberalism.

Personally I am turned off by the populist rhetoric which attacks ā€œeconomic growthā€, given it is not nuanced and it fails to understand the underlying issues. He is right though, mass immigration is disguising growth in GDP as okay while obscuring the reality that GDP Per Capita is and has been falling for some time. The problem is not necessarily economic growth or even population growth (a symptom of deeper problems). Rather it is the lack of green growth which is not being facilitated through pigovian corrective taxes on the negative externalities of some forms of growth, as well as mass immigration being perpetuated without governments taking the responsibility for providing the necessary services and planning. Most of that is sabotaged by the Game of Mates.

Dickā€™s economic policies in this regard are a mixed bag in my view. He has some good stuff like mentioning Land Tax, and that mention of BI/JG. However other stuff like raising company tax just seems stupid. He lacks the economic nuance to understand the superiority of taxing of economics rents over taxing production.
Thankfully heā€™s not a protectionist calling for more tariffs.

This level of economics is deeply above my head, but just out of interest where do you think that The Sustainable Party fits in between Dick Smith, us and your personal views?

The Sustainable Party is really just Dick without all the populist rhetoric and hardcore social democratic wealth/income redistribution. It seems like Dick has parted ways with them to evolve into and become the Australian Sanders/Corbyn - except instead of being protectionist heā€™s anti (mass) immigration. I couldā€™ve sworn he was originally working with them (The Sustainable Party).

My personal views are pretty much the views of the PPAU - classical liberal, Geo/Left-Libertarian. Dick Smith on the other hand seems very much a social democrat. Generally I prefer social democrat types after the PPAU, given I consider them the next best thing available. Although they also frustrate me to some degree since their economic policies are to some extent illiterate, they hit some key targets but then go off the rails on others.
Iā€™m all for an equitable/fair distribution of (unearned) wealth and income, but many of the policies proposed are inferior methods for achieving that. They unnecessarily destroy a whole load of production in the process, while stealing peopleā€™s earned income/wealth.
