Towards Reintroducing Queensland's Upper House

I think this could be a good platform to campaign on in Qld. The public may not warm to the idea of introducing more politicians, so maybe a unicameral MMP system might be a good option to consider.

Yeah I always thought this could be an interesting ā€œreformā€ policy to push for but weā€™d need some kind of implementation planā€¦ Iā€™ll bring it up at our next meetup which is this Sat if youā€™re in Brissie kaz.

Iā€™m based in Sydney here but you can have my best wishes instead

Whatever system it needs to be a check to majoritarianism - it is short sighted bullying for Brisbane to decide who runs the entire state.

Federally States get equal billing - which is a major strength of our Constitution.

I note that most of the comments talk about what can be sold rather than what is best - this is sadly the way media and people work. Complex ideas are difficult to get across to the population unless media and all parties are cooperating - it is too easy to scare the electorate.

There is also an argument for restructuring the States completely - bundling huge populations together to stop them riding roughshod over rural Australia.

First of all, welcome to the forum

@jedb and I and a few others put a lot of thought into electoral systems for Australia a few years back. So the Party policy remains agnostic as to whether Qld should have an upper house or not, but does support the introduction of mixed-member-proportional representation. This preserves local representation, ensures that a majority of MPs in Parliament represent a majority of votes, and ensures that every vote, no matter where it is cast, has equal impact on the makeup of Parliament.

Personally I think if Qld adopted MMP it wouldnā€™t need an upper house.

There is actually a new campaign starting to reintroduce a Queensland upper house, and Iā€™m following along. Iā€™m not sure if itā€™s got legs yet but it seems to have some interest.
