Canning by-election

Pirates of Western Australia.

As you may have heard there will be a by-election for the Federal Seat of Canning in Western Australia on Saturday 19 September. Tonight the National Council voted to field a candidate in this by-election. The National Council is now calling for nominations for pre-selection.

If you would like to nominate yourself for pre-selection in this by-election, you are required to submit via email your intention to do so. Please email your nomination to nationalcouncil@pirateparty.org.au

Nominees must submit a detailed and truthful statement of their suitability for election and must disclose anything that would bring the Pirate Party into disrepute, would be found through a police background check, or would disallow the candidate from legally contesting the election. If you are chosen as the candidate for the Canning by-election you will be required to sign a statement to the effect of: “I hereby pledge to advance and adhere to the platform and ideals of Pirate Party Australia, both during the election campaign and upon election to Parliament.”

Nominations close at 12 noon on Sunday, 23 August 2015 (AWST/Perth time).

A pre-selection meeting will be held, followed by a ballot where Western Australian Pirates will decide which candidate will be nominated. This pre-selection meeting will take place online on the same afternoon as nominations close. After the meeting ballots will be issued and there will be a 24 hour voting period. Voting will then close on Monday 24 August at 6pm (AWST/Perth time).

The short notice is due to the by-election being announced only earlier this week and the consequent tight deadlines stipulated by the Australian Electoral Commission. Serendipitously, this by-election will coincide with International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

We will also notify you in coming days of a fundraising campaign and how you can volunteer to assist in campaigning in the lead up to (and on) election day. If you wish to help further by joining the Canning by-election campaign committee, please email your expression of interest to nationalcouncil@pirateparty.org.au.

Thank you all for you ongoing support.
